Hi there, it's me, Tasfia. I will be writing about every question you have regarding IELTS. Working at MIE English Academy, I have often been asked two questions: what's easier, CELPIP vs IELTS?

Today, I will tell you about the easier steps to take between IELTS and CELPIP. Both are accepted for immigration and university admissions.

In this blog, I tried my best to write down the comparisons of these two so that I can make you clear about every question you have :

Where are IELTS and CELPIP accepted?

IELTS is accepted globally, ideal if you're aiming for the UK, Australia, or any international university.

This does not mean you cannot use the IELTS in Canada; it is also widely accepted. IELTS is an open door for every student who wants to go abroad. Every country asks for IELTS, sometimes MOI.

CELPIP is mainly used within Canada, especially for PR (Permanent Resident), Express Entry, and Canadian citizenship.

Other reasons why CELPIP is mainly used in Canada:

  • Cost: CELPIP is slightly more reasonable than other tests like IELTS in Canada.
  • Test Format: CELPIP is a computer-delivered test, which some test-takers find easier than traditional paper-based tests.
  • Recognition: CELPIP is not widely recognized, but institutions in Canada accept it.

Why It's Great :

Now that you already know the differences between IELTS and CELPIP, let's break down the other parts so that you can easily differentiate between these two. These exams have four modules: Listening , Reading , Writing , and Speaking.

Listening :

  • IELTS : Paper or computer-based; includes various accents (British, Australian, Canadian)
  • CELPIP : Fully computer-based; Canadian accent throughout.

Reading :

  • IELTS : Three long passages (Academic) or everyday materials (General).
  • CELPIP : Everyday scenarios, workplace settings, simpler and more direct.

Writing :

  • IELTS : Two tasks: essay and letter/report.
  • CELPIP : Two tasks: writing an email and responding to a survey.

Speaking :

  • IELTS : Face-to-face with an examiner.
  • CELPIP : Computer-based, speaking into a microphone.

Which is easier?

Now that you know, which one are you finding easier, though this depends on your comfort level with certain formats?

CELPIP

CELPIP may feel easier if you're tech-savvy and comfortable speaking into a microphone. It also uses Canadian English, which might be simpler to understand and less formal than the academic tone of IELTS.

IELTS

IELTS may suit you better if you’re good at writing essays or prefer human interaction during speaking.

My personal experience:

As someone who studies English literature, I naturally leaned toward IELTS initially. Its academic structure felt familiar. I liked writing essays and analysing reading passages. However, when I tried CELPIP mock tests out of curiosity, I noticed some key differences that made me think twice.

Here’s what i felt:

  • Listening: CELPIP’s listening test was clearer and more conversational. Also, it shows the video. So it’s easier for you to visualise, as you are seeing what’s happening, but in the meantime, you will get distracted because you are not only focusing on the lightning. IELTS listening can be tricky due to a mix of accents and a faster pace.
  • Reading: IELTS reading is more academic and harder, especially under time pressure. CELPIP reading was shorter and easier to follow.
  • Writing: IELTS requires more formal and academic writing. CELPIP felt more practical—writing an email or a quick opinion.
  • Speaking: I found IELTS speaking more enjoyable because I could talk to a real person. CELPIP’s speaking felt robotic sometimes, and I was unsure if I was expressive enough while speaking to a screen.

So, which do I prefer? IELTS, because it aligns more with my academic background and allows face-to-face interaction. However, if I were applying for Canadian immigration only, CELPIP would be my choice simply because it’s faster, more practical, and focused on real-life communication in Canada.

Both IELTS and CELPIP are valid, reliable tests of English. The better one depends on your goals, comfort level, and strengths. If you're aiming for Canada, CELPIP might be more convenient and tailored for immigration.

IELTS is the more versatile option if you plan to study or work abroad in other countries. My suggestion? Try a mock test of both. That’s how I figured out what worked for me.
